AcceleNet FAQs:What is AcceleNet? AcceleNet enables your dial-up modem to operate at 2-3x its current speed, thereby giving you a speed experience comparable to an 80-100kbps connection. How Does It Work? We provide you with some software to load on your computer. Every time you browse the web or use our email service, software on our end compresses the web page or email and sends it to you. The software on your computer decompresses it and displays it as normal. By making web pages smaller, we can transmit them to you faster. You can easily turn it off and on as your needs require. How Do I Get Started? Register here for the service and we will give you a link to download the software as well as a username to put in when prompted during the software install to enable the service. After that it just works in the background. What Does It Accelerate Best? AcceleNet works best on general web page content (HTML, JPEG, GIFs, etc.) and public email (SMTP/POP3) with attachments (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) What Doesn't It Is Accelerate Well? Executables and already compressed or encrypted data such as EXE files, MP3 files, video and HTTPS connections. Will AcceleNet Work on my Computer? AcceleNet client software will run under Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home. The current version of AcceleNet will not install on Windows 95, Windows NT or non-Windows operating systems. AcceleNet is also incompatible with other acceleration software and with software that uses an LSP (Layered Service Provider). AcceleNet will not install if McAfee Personal Firewall or other LSP-based software is present. (McAfee is incompatible with many networking applications.) AcceleNet has been successfully used with virus checkers including Norton AntiVirus and some versions of McAfee VirusScan. At present AcceleNet has not developed for Macintosh Computers. AcceleNet also does not work with America Online.
