What is Practical Philosophy ?![]()
|
Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom. Broadly speaking, it is anyone's opinion about anything. Yet when we ask the question, "What is Philosophy?" it conjures up a variety of replies, the most common being "Philosophy is about the meaning of life". This School of Practical Philosophy does not speculate as to the nature of the universe, nor as to what the cosmos was like 15 billion years ago, nor by what laws each part of the heavens came into being. Only when enough is known about human affairs will speculation begin on divine concerns. You are the subject of this knowledge, the given end being to put an end to the struggle on the part of the struggling individual. What needs to be accomplished in life is to know the seekers nature. Just a proposition: Suppose "there is" an identity between the seeker and the sought, and this identity can be known "here and now" through an appropriate means of knowledge. Now if this knowledge happens to make the difference between total fulfillment and a futile endless struggle? Is there a choice? Even though our aim is to teach "Practical Philosophy", it should not be looked upon as Philosophy, Theology, Metaphysics or Poetry. It is an attempt to confront some of the problems facing us, both in modern day life, and as human beings. Today, more than ever before, there is an urgent need to apply ourselves to these issues. We can see this very clearly from our newspapers, magazines, books, movies, and television programs, but most of all in our daily lives. Life has never seemed more futile. Regardless of our technological advances and material prosperity, we have no peace of mind and live in fear and anger. We are caught in the lurid dream that pursuit of pleasure will lead us to permanent joy, and the pursuit of profit will give us complete security. Most of us have accomplished no more in life than to bring about our own private fulfillment, often at the expense of others. The problem that arises for the individual who is seeking security through gain, is that an insecure person plus anything in the world still makes an insecure person. An insecure person relying on an insecure thing or being for security! How absurd! Hanging on to it for dear life because without it they imagine they are back to being insecure. Entire lives are focused on gathering crutches such as these! This school visualizes freedom from limitation. The traditional method of teaching adopted by the school and the teachers too, are tools for means of gaining self- knowledge. Of course these tools are no longer required once you see yourself as full, and complete "here and now". But be careful not to throw the boat away before you cross the river! Here is the instrument, use it with reverence, as it is to be, Only then, when you are free from this continuous struggle "to become", does your struggle come to an end. But you may say; why should I be required to consult Philosophy to know about myself. After all, I am the one who has it to know about myself. Well, what is being said here is much more than what you take yourself to be. In fact it says that everything you want to be, you already ARE!
This is the vision being put forward:When you have studied thoroughly as guided by qualified teachers using traditional teaching methods, you come to know that the seeker IS the sought, and only then will you see yourself as being "Here & now", full and complete With this knowledge you are the complete and happy person, the sort to be counted in this world, but your concept through which you see yourself now is just the opposite. Wouldn't you like to change this? Herein is the way ...
