Robert Cogen was
born in Los Angeles in 1935. He graduated from the University
of Southern California with degrees in Law and Zoology and pursued
a career in scientific and medical law. Over many years Robert
has done pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencil illustrations
from nature inspired by his early mentor, Robert Stebbins, a world-renowned
zoologist and biological illustrator at the University of California,
Berkeley.
In 1978 Robert began
producing stained glass windows and lamps under the tutelage of
Mark Weinger. In stained glass Robert has found the great range
of colors and textures which fill his work. "Here were colors
woven together in ways I had never been able to achieve on my
palette. They ignited my imagination." He combines the glass with
his careful observations of nature to produce imaginative landscapes,
myths and florals. "Most of the glass I use is hand blown in multiple
colors. Frequently, it is rare and expensive, but the added dimension
it gives my work makes it worthwhile."
