The Magnificant Frigatebird (Fragata magnificens) is one of two frigatebirds found in the Galapagos Islands. They are up to 40" long, with a wingspan of up to 8'. Frigatebirds have the largest wingspan-to-weight ratio of any bird, and are very able fliers. Mature males are all black (except for a bright red pouch at its troat it inflates into an impressive display during breeding season). Mature females are slightly larger, with white breasts and sometimes shoulders, otherwise also black (or a dark gray). They nest in rudely-built twig nests, in low trees and shrubs near the shore. Male and female share incubating chores over the 42-day period until hatching.
