Briceland, California

In the Spring of 1970 my then-wife Teri and myself bought these 27 acres in Southern Humboldt County, about 200 miles north of San Francisco, and about 20 miles inland from Shelter Cove. We pitched camp on a flat that's in the trees just beyond where you see the road go into the forest in the picture below. That first season, we got the water system and the road in, and the foundations and floor done. When the rains came we fled to Eureka, rented a house, and found decent jobs for the winter. In the Spring of '71 we returned, and by Fall had an enclosed, dry, warm structure.

Deceptive photo: the "fisheye" makes the trellis look curved - - which, as you can see with a normal lens, it is not.
