On The Letter issues "D"-"G"



UNDER CONSTRUCTION

These stamps are denominated, but with a letter instead of a number. They are used during rate changes. The letter denomination allows the USPS to sell the stamps for whatever rate is set, and in any event for more than the old rate.The letter issues began with "A", and have now continued through "G", as the rate changes roll along just a bit faster than the mechanism to set the new rates does. The "D" was the first issue in the PNC period.

Released as the rate changed from 20¢. Face value was set at 22¢. Not valid for postage to foreign addresses.

The D Official:
This was the second, and to date the last, official coil stamp released with a plate number on it. The government seems to have decided that it cost too much to sell plate strips to collectors, but it was not willing to allow collectors to use scrap officials on unofficial mail.

G is for old Glory

The G issue was probably the most complex plate number coil release. It was printed by three printers, perforated in two methods, and little was done to prevent the proliferation of plate numbers which marks the American Bank Note printings (see the (10¢) Eagle & Shield). Some dealers will only sell the ABN printing in sets. I offer individual prices here with the warning that prices, especially for used singles and covers, are probably not stable.
